New Amazon Rainforest Progammes for Globalteer volunteers

Globalteer is now offering the chance to volunteer at two new projects in the unique and unforgettable surroundings of the Amazon rainforest in Peru.

Help conserve the Amazon Rainforest

Our first new programme, the Volunteer Peru Amazon Rainforest Project, is a research and conservation project in the Madre de Dios Region of Peru where volunteers can work with the permanent teams assisting research projects focusing on bird, caiman, mammal, insect, botany, reptile and amphibian conservation.

Volunteers live under canvas at the project base which is 4-6 hours by boat and 4WD from the airport at Puerto Maldonado. From here volunteers can join teams on research trips deep into the rainforest, often staying overnight in remote, untouched and pristine jungle settings.

There are toilet facilities and cold water showers at the project and volunteers can enjoy freshly prepared meals in spacious communal areas, cooked by the friendly local staff.

This really is the perfect volunteer placement for anyone who is passionate about the conservation of one of the world’s most diverse, fascinating and endangered eco-systems, and ideal for nature-lovers who like to spend time in genuine wilderness, falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

Help save rainforest wildlife

The second project, the Peru Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary is located just 11 km outside of Puerto Maldonado which is less than an hour’s flight from Cusco and just an hour and a half from the Peruvian capital Lima.

Volunteers at the Peru Rainforest wildlife Sanctuary assist the project staff with a wide variety of duties including food preparation and feeding the rescued animals, helping to exercise the animals to keep them healthy and fit, construction, repair and cleaning of animal enclosures.

Another important objective is to also reintroduce the animals back into the wild when feasible, thus the number and types of animals constantly varies. Some of the animals that have resided at the centre in the past include Howler Monkeys, Tortoises, Coati, Red Brocked Deer, White Lipped Peccaries, Brown Capuchin Monkeys, Three-toed Sloths, Ant-Eaters, and various types of Macaws.

Accommodation at the Wildlife sanctuary is in basic but comfortable huts and again three nutritious meals are prepared daily for our volunteers.

Prices start from just £600 or US$890 for a week at the Wildlife Sanctuary and £775 or US$1200 at the Rainforest Conservation project. This includes accommodation, all meals, comprehensive pre-arrival information, in-country orientation & support and transfers between Puerto Maldonado and your project.

Why not combine the Amazon Rainforest with a trip to Cusco?

Puerto Maldonado is less than an hour by plane from Cusco so you could even combine volunteering at one of our Amazon Rainforest projects with a trip to one of the Andes most beautiful and historic cities. Here you could spend some time volunteering at our Peru Community project or our Peru Dog rescue project and then take a trip to Machu Picchu too...the possibilitie are endless! Just contact our friendly team in Peru to find out more about combining two or more of our Peruvian volunteer programmes.
