Join Siem Reap’s Giant Puppet Parade

We are looking for volunteers to come and join one of Cambodia's biggest community arts projects in 2014.

Are you creative? Enthusiastic? Artistic? The Cambodia Community Project needs you! Globalteer is seeking volunteers to get involved with the Giant Puppet Parade, an amazing community event which happens every year in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Volunteers must be available for the fixed dates from Thursday 6th February - Thursday 27th February (3 weeks).

Now in its eighth year, The Giant Puppet Parade will see 600 children from 14 organisations around Siem Reap displaying their puppet creations for an expected audience of 15,000 people on Saturday 22nd February 2014.

Volunteers who are selected to work exclusively on The Puppet Parade will spend the three weeks leading up to the event working with Khmer artists and children from local NGOs designing and building the amazing puppets from scratch.

If you can’t stretch to three weeks, but would still like to work on this amazing event, you can still get involved by volunteering with one of our partner projects, whose children will be taking part in the parade.

In the two weeks before the event, teams of children work with puppeteers and artists building their very own giant puppets which they proudly carry through streets of Siem Reap on what is recognised as one of the highlights of the year for visitors and locals alike.

How to get involved

If you have a background, a hidden talent or an unanswered calling in arts and crafts, theatre, construction, or anything that could be put to good use in the creation of these colourful giant puppets, then please apply for your volunteer placement through our Volunteer Cambodia Community Project pages, and make sure you mention the puppet project in your application, giving as much detail as you can about your interest and skills.

If you would like to work exclusively on the puppet project please make sure you tell us in your application, and select Thursday 6th February 2014 as your start date, and three weeks as your duration, leaving on Thursday February 27th.

If you would like to work at one of our partner projects taking part in the parade, please make sure that you tell us in your application and ensure that your placement starts no later than Thursday 6th February 2014 and don’t forget that the parade itself is on February 22nd.  Places are limited so be sure to apply as early as possible!

If you'd like to read more about working on the parade please read this Giant Puppet Parade blog from Globalteer's former Development manager, Annie Irving.
