Thank You to Our Champions

Our Picaflor House Champions are individuals and groups who have made a real difference through one-off or ongoing donations. Their gifts cover our running costs, help us respond to urgent and unforeseen challenges, and let us grow our programmes to reach even more children in Oropesa.

Anyone can become a Picaflor House Champion by donating to support our work.

The People Behind Picaflor House

Thanks to the amazing support of our donors and volunteers, Picaflor House can keep helping to give the children of Oropesa a brighter future. Here are some of our great supporters.

Lai Choi Kuen with children at Picaflor House

Volunteer & donor since 2013

Lai Choi Kuen

Choi came all the way from Singapore to volunteer at Picaflor House in 2013, and she has come back every year since. Her significant donation let us set up our much-needed kindergarten and nutrition programmes.

The kindergarten employs a full-time teacher and prepares up to 20 pre-school children for their first year of primary school. Caring for these children often fell to their older siblings, who then could not attend Picaflor House. Choi's programme eases the childcare burden on local families and lets those siblings get an education with us.

Choi still supports the kindergarten and funds our nutrition programme, so every child at Picaflor House gets lunch and a snack to take home. We are grateful for her support over the years.

Kristine de Bever

Kristine volunteered at Picaflor House for five weeks in October and November 2015, helping in English, kindergarten, geography and art classes.

Originally from the Netherlands, and having lived in Australia, France and Spain, Kristine brought a range of insights and skills to Picaflor. After leaving Peru she was inspired to help raise much-needed funds.

We would like to thank Kristine and her family's business, PacFood, for their continued and generous support. Each of their ongoing donations is vital in helping us achieve great things year after year.

Durham University

Based in the north-east of England, Durham University's 'raising and giving' group has raised and donated thousands of pounds for Picaflor House over the last several years.

DUCK student groups have visited Picaflor House every year since 2013. Working as a team, they have plenty of experience fundraising for the children.

Josephine Mannering

Jo supports Picaflor House through her bric-a-brac stall in Devon. She started with a single table of second-hand books outside her cottage, and over the years the stall and her customer base have grown. The public donates books, CDs, musical instruments, ornaments and china, which she sells to passers-by, locals and holidaymakers.

To date, Jo has raised thousands of pounds, helping pay for both the setting up of Picaflor House and its monthly running costs. If you are ever in the south-west of England, let us know and we will point you to her stall. Thank you, Jo!
