Why Cusco?
Why Volunteer in Cusco? History, Culture and Community in One City
Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is now a UNESCO World Heritage city where colonial churches stand on Inca walls and Quechua is still spoken in the markets. It's safe and easy to get around, and it's full of things to do after your volunteer day, from Spanish classes to salsa nights. That makes it one of the best places in South America to volunteer.

Landscape
The Andes on Your Doorstep
Cusco sits high in the Andes, surrounded by mountains, green valleys and Inca terraces. Step outside the city and you're in some of the most spectacular scenery in South America, with hiking trails, viewpoints and villages just a short trip away.

Culture
Quechua, Chicha & Salsa
Quechua, the language of the Incas, is still spoken in the markets. Try chicha morada, a sweet purple-corn drink, at a local café, watch traditional dances at a festival, and join our weekly salsa class. This is living culture, not a museum exhibit.

Community
Our Home in Cusco Since 2006
Globalteer has worked in Cusco since 2006. Our team lives here, runs our projects and knows the city inside out, from the best local cafés to hidden viewpoints and weekend trips, so you feel at home from the day you arrive.

Adventure
Weekends Built for Exploration
Explore Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley, hike to the seven-colour Rainbow Mountain or visit Machu Picchu. With a long weekend, you can even see the floating islands of Lake Titicaca. Your weekends are free to fill with bucket-list experiences.

How Long to Stay
How Long Can You Volunteer in Cusco?
Stay from 1 to 12 weeks, starting any Monday. One week is a powerful start, but Cusco rewards those who stay longer. Two weeks lets you go deeper into your project, build real friendships and fit in a weekend adventure. By three or four weeks the city starts to feel like home – the children (or the dogs!) recognise you, the market vendors know your order, and you start questioning that return flight.
Perfect start

Week
A powerful introduction. You'll complete your orientation, begin the project, and experience Cusco's highlights.

Travel Information
Getting to Cusco
Everything you need to know before you book.
Getting There
Fly into Cusco (CUZ), usually via Lima with a short domestic flight. Full arrival details are sent after you book.
Best Time to Visit
Programmes run year-round. The dry season (May–October) is great for hiking; the rainy season (November–March) is greener and quieter, with rain usually lasting just a couple of hours a day.
Climate & Altitude
Cusco sits high in the Andes, so take it easy for your first couple of days while you acclimatise. Days are sunny and around 15°C; nights can drop to about 5°C, so pack layers.
Cost of Living
Cusco is affordable – a local set lunch costs just a few dollars, and your accommodation, food, transport to and from your project and cultural experiences are already included.
Visas
Many nationalities, including the UK, EU, US, Canada and Australia, can visit Peru visa-free as tourists. Requirements depend on your nationality, so always check before you travel.
Safety & Support
Cusco has a low crime rate and welcomes thousands of visitors every year. Normal city awareness applies, and our local team is on call 24/7.
Staying Connected
Pick up a local SIM or eSIM on arrival (Holafly and Airalo work well in Peru). Wi-Fi is available at the Volunteer House.
Health & Vaccinations
Speak to your doctor or travel clinic 6–8 weeks before you travel and mention you'll be working with children or animals.

Much love ❤️❤️I am so grateful to Globalteer for all that you do! I had the privilege of working as an NGO Assistant Intern in Peru with Globalteer for 6 months. I did this as part of university placement year and truly had such an enriching and valuable experience. The team of people you work with are all passionate about the mission of the charity and never fail to make you feel supported and at home. It was an ineffable experience! Being at Globalteer this season meant broadening my horizons, professional and personal growth, taking on challenges, closing my eyes and seeing with my heart, but above all it was an ineffable experience and as a result I lost count of the good memories I took with me. from here. Creating, designing, editing, writing, among other functions, was my job for 4 months here and I couldn't be more proud of my entire process as an intern/intern, which allowed me to enhance my soft skills, be self-taught and, above all, to get out of my comfort zone. Colombia is my home, but Peru will always have a part of me. Total thanks. Thank you Globalfam.
Gracias totales. Gracias Globalfam

Great program, great volunteer opportunities, would recommend to anyone. It was organised so well and I felt so comfortable throughout the whole process. Late last year I was able to spend a month in Peru to volunteer at two of the Globalteer programs- The Dog Shelter in Cusco and The Amazon Wildlife Sanctuary in Puerto Maldonado. It was organised so well and I felt so comfortable throughout the whole process. I was picked up from the airport and the staff made me feel so welcome and at home. Being a young girl in a country like Peru, my family and friends were quite worried at first, as was I, however, I felt safe the entire time. I didn't have to worry one bit about the organisation of both volunteer groups, even though they were on the opposite sides of the country, it was an easy process with the staff being so quick and prompt in replies and helpful when I arrived in Cusco. I genuinely had an incredible time with so many life lessons and learning experiences taught throughout the trip. Both of our Cusco projects contribute to the UN's global goals – not just doing good locally, but helping to build lasting change. At Picaflor House, children from low-income families – girls and boys alike, many from Quechua-speaking villages – get a safe place to learn and play, a nutritious daily lunch and help with homework, reading and English, while our Mobile Library takes books to rural communities. Through PAWS, our vets care for around 3,000 dogs and cats a year, carry out free neutering and run vaccination campaigns in rural villages, building healthier communities for people and animals.
