Before leaving for your internship in Peru
Learn Some Spanish Basics
Not many people in Cusco speak English: knowing some Spanish basic will make life much easier. Learn how to introduce yourself, order food in a restaurant, ask for prices, and use common verbs. Locals will appreciate it!
Don’t be Afraid
Flying to a new country alone can feel scary, but once you arrive in Cusco you won’t be alone. You will make lifelong memories and you will learn things that you could never learn at home in your comfort zone. The hardest part is deciding to go and getting on that flight, but once you do, you will be forever grateful you took the bold step.
Volunteers’ Top Tips for Your NGO Internship Abroad
Take it slow
Cusco is 3,400 meters above sea level, and altitude can really affect your body. The lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes can cause fatigue and even trouble spleeping. When you first arrive, take it easy, drink plenty of water, and rest. Avoid partying in your first days and keep in mind that you might need more sleep than usual.
Be flexible
No two days are exactly the same here. Your tasks might change, plans can shift, and sometimes unexpected opportunities will pop up. This applies to every position within the organization. Embracing flexibility will make your work experience smoother, think of it as part of the adventure: adaptability is your best friend in Cusco!
Embrace “Peruvian time”
In Peru it is common for things to happen later than arranged, and plans can change at the last minute. Adapting to “Peruvian time” is key to enjoying your stay. Take a deep breath, slow down, and use those extra minutes to enjoy the view, chat with locals, or practice your Spanish.

How to get the most out of your internship
Connect with people
Talk to the locals involved in our projects: teachers from Mobile Library, vets from Paws, the cook from Picaflor. They’re all friendly and happy to share their experiences.
Also, get out of the work environment! Visit local markets, chat with shopkeepers, tour guides, waiters, or even your taxi driver. There’s no better way to experience authentic Peru than by talking to its people.
Enjoy the small things
Yes, you’ll probably visit Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, but don’t overlook the little moments. Appreciate the “normal days”, the parade passing right outside the office, cooking dinner with your team, chatting with a child from Picaflor.
