Why Does Physical Education Matter for Children?

In rural Siem Reap, sport and play are rarely part of the school day. The government asks schools to include sport in their curriculum, but most village schools do not have the equipment, the space or the know-how to teach it. Many children also take on adult responsibilities at a young age, which leaves little time to be active and simply play.

Physical education gives children a safe place to move, learn about their bodies and build habits that last. Our physical education programme in Cambodia brings structured PE lessons to children who would otherwise go without.

Our Physical Education Programme

Our local coaches run free PE lessons in schools and community centres across Siem Reap, alongside weekly football and volleyball sessions. Our programme includes:

Warm-ups and stretching

Children learn to warm up and stretch before they play. These simple routines help prevent injuries and support better performance in sport and in everyday life.

Football and volleyball skills

Coaches teach the basic skills, rules and teamwork of football and volleyball in an organised way, so every child gets the chance to take part and improve.

Learning about the body

Lessons teach children how the human body works and how to look after it, from staying active to understanding why a healthy lifestyle matters.

Handling injuries

Coaches give practical demonstrations on how to deal with common injuries like cuts, scrapes and bruises, so children know what to do on and off the pitch.

After-school sports clubs

Our coaches also run after-school programmes, giving children a safe, supervised place to play and stay active once lessons end.

Building Lifelong Healthy Habits

Physical education is about more than one lesson a week. Warm-up routines, regular exercise and an understanding of how the body works are habits children can carry with them for life. Sport also teaches communication and teamwork naturally, as children learn to listen to their coach, support their teammates and play by the rules. Our goal is for every child to leave the pitch healthier, more confident and more likely to stay active as they grow.

Working With Schools and Communities

We take PE to where children already are. Our coaches work in schools, children’s centres and other non-profit organisations across Siem Reap, providing physical education lessons and after-school programmes. Today our sports programme in Cambodia reaches more than 2,500 children in 7 villages and 9 schools. Many rural schools have asked for this support, and we continue to expand into remote areas where access to sport is most limited.

Physical Education With a Social Message

Every session combines sport with an important life lesson. Alongside skills and fitness, our coaches use games to talk about topics like children’s rights, gender equality, the environment and fair play. Children not only learn new skills but also grow in confidence, and find ways to face challenges, stand up for their rights and share their opinions.

The Impact of Physical Education

Regular physical education helps children in ways that reach far beyond the sports field. Here is what we see in the children who take part:

Stronger, healthier bodies

Regular exercise and warm-up routines help children build fitness, coordination and strength, and understand how to look after their bodies.

Confidence icon

Confidence and self-esteem

Learning a new skill and being part of a team helps children believe in themselves, on the pitch and in the classroom.

Teamwork and communication

Games teach children to listen, share, support one another and work towards a common goal.

Fair play and respect

Sportsmanship and self-improvement are at the heart of every lesson, so children learn to win well, lose well and treat others fairly.

The Role of Sports Volunteers

Volunteers bring extra energy and fresh ideas to our PE lessons. You don’t need to be a trained coach, but you do need to love sport and enjoy working with children. As a sports volunteer in Siem Reap, you will support our local coaches in sessions, help plan and design new games, and assist with sports for social impact activities. Full training and support are provided.
