Sporting success for Cambodian girls

Around 1,000 children from NGOs in and around Siem Reap have enjoyed a fun and friendly 2015 Globalteer Games, with this year being extra special since it was organised and run entirely by participants in Globalteer’s Goals For Girls Female Empowerment initiative!

Goals For Girls is a Globalteer Sports Project initiative that is working to promote gender equality and female empowerment through sport in Cambodia – a country where girls still face significant social challenges and cultural pressures.

This year, 26 girls spent six months learning team work, event planning and leadership skills before being handed the responsibility of running the Globalteer Games.

The games were chosen since it was a large event with lots of complex challenges for the girls to work on together and dig deep to overcome – which they certainly did!

The games were a huge success, and hundreds of local children experienced the thrill of a friendly sporting competition in a real sports stadium, with 13 events played, including high jump, soccer, three-legged races, wheelbarrow races and king ball.

Globalteer’s Sports Manager Charlie Pomroy explained how this year’s event was all about the girls.

“I was overseeing the event making sure the girls were okay, but everything went according to plan. The games were a huge success, and the girls were brilliant. It was really empowering for the girls to be the leadership figures for the day, and together they reacted to any issues, governed themselves and ran an amazing event! ”

Charlie couldn´t have been more proud of the Goals for Girls participants, adding,

“When we started this programme I knew we were going to be working with a fantastic group of girls but they have surpassed every expectation of mine.  If we can keep this group of girls together for the next few year there is no limits to what they could achieve.”

The Globalteer Games always receive a lot of local support and this year was no different. We'd like to extend a huge thank you to all of our sponsors who helped to make the games such a huge success and gave the Globalteer Goals for Girls girls such a wonderful opportunity to put their leadership and organisational skills to great use.

This year's generous sponsors were: The Heritage Suites Hotel, The Shinta Mani Hotel, The Ivy Guest House & Bar, Charlie's Bar, Babel Guest House, Irina sports Bar, New Beginnings Cambodia, Memoire d'Angkor, Genevieve's Restaurant, Belmiro's Pizzas and Subs, Maison 557, Walter Rudy, The Sun Restaurant and Cafe Central.
