Helping Hands Solar Power Project
We all love a bit of sun! Lying on a beach, cocktail in hand, with the sun shining high sounds idyllic to a lot of people…
but imagine teaching, learning and studying in that heat…
At Helping Hands we want to create an environment which is conducive to learning and working. We would like to install fans in each classroom to give our students and teachers some relief from the heat, and lighting to help our cook Rhi prepare breakfast in the early mornings before even the sun has risen.
Added to that, just like in any other part of the world, the importance and use of technology is growing faster and faster in Cambodia. Now, more than ever, computer skills are essential for anyone seeking work and we want to ensure our students have the best possible chance of securing a job in their chosen field in the future. Plus, computers are a great tool in the classroom when learning English, Khmer and Math too!
But for fans, lights and computers, we need power…!

Respecting our environment is important to all of us at Helping Hands, and since the sun in Cambodia is strong, hot, and out every single day, using solar power is the most environmentally friendly and sustainable way to install electricity at the school. At Helping Hands we currently only have two solar panels, which generate just enough power to use one fan and maybe charge a laptop or phone.
To be able to generate enough power for fans, lights, run a water pump and eventually have a computer lab, we need to raise a total of $8000, but we plan to work it in phases as funds become available.
