There is something strange going on in Colombia. For a country that is generally not that high on most people's list of must-see places, it has an uncanny knack of getting under visitors' skin: A real case of "once bitten, forever smitten."
A couple of months ago you might have read about Danish volunteer Michael Pederson who volunteered with Globalteer at our Colombia Children’s project earlier this year. Michael signed up for a three month placement but once he started working with the children at our project in Medellin he found he couldn’t drag himself away and ended up staying for six!
Well, the Mysterious Medellin Effect appears to be spreading. You can now read the story of Kevin Jalbert Jr (pictured), a 21-year old American volunteer who made his first ever trip outside of the US last year, and travelled to Colombia for a volunteer placement at our children’s project in Medellin.
Like Michael, he fell victim to the charms of this unassuming city. Captivated by its year round spring-like weather, carnival atmosphere, and of course the children at the Globalteer children’s project, Kevin soon found he had seriously underestimated the effect that volunteering in Colombia would have on him.
