Project History

The Malaysia Sea Turtle Conservation Project is on a quest to protect and conserve the sea turtle population in Malaysia. In order to do this it aims to better understand the turtle population to be able to make relevant management & conservation plans.

The project works in collaboration with the Malaysian Department of Fisheries to help protect the sea turtles in the Perhentian Islands.

They also work on programmes to raise environmental awareness and among the local residents and tourists in the islands.

How the project is helping
Green sea turtles are resident in the areas surrounding the project, and during nesting season, many come on to the beaches to lay eggs. The hatchlings migrate across entire oceans to feeding grounds, and are consequently at risk from many threats, from pollution, to fishing nets, poachers and coastal development. To be able to produce effective protection and conservation programmes, it is necessary to understand the population. Which is why the photo surveys and data collection on the turtles in the area is vital.
Unfortunately, poaching of turtles eggs is still a huge problem. To help protect the nest, nightly patrols are done to find nest and relocate them to a safe hatchery until they are hatched and ready to be released back to the ocean.
Why the project need volunteers

Volunteers make a huge difference by helping the project's local staff with their work including turtle surveys, nest protection and the releasing of hatchlings into the sea. The more volunteers there are at the project, the more vital work can be carried out.

Get involved and Volunteer with Sea Turtles to help vital conservation efforts!
