  • Village visits to collect information, stories, photos and videos of the Bunong culture

  • This is a dynamic project in which volunteers’ skills will be used to the best of their abilities to support the project

Why we need volunteers

Volunteers are essential in supporting the research and documentation of all aspects of the Bunong lifestyle, and motivating the Bunong youth by displaying an interest in their traditional way of life.
The Bunong language is founded on oral tradition and until recently had no written form. Bunong students working within the Cambodian education system found they were at an even greater disadvantage to native Cambodians in first having to learn and attain literacy in a second language.

Mondulkiri has the lowest rate of upper secondary school enrolment in Cambodia standing at a mere five percent of males and three percent of females.

Heroic efforts are needed to defend Bunong rights from the threats associated with the contemporary world. Bunong youth are eager to be at the forefront of protecting their way of life, not only by continuing it but by documenting it. Whilst many young Bunong recognise that they will not live in the same way as their ancestors did, they are proud to be from such a unique, incredible culture and are at the forefront of recording every aspect of it. They are balancing new modernisation interests with traditional culture.

”They may not have many material possessions but they have the most warm and open spirits, and they welcomed us into their lives without reservation.”
