New opportunities at Cambodian Women's project
This week we’ve got two reasons to celebrate some wonderful news from our Cambodian Women’s Empowerment
project, based in Siem Reap. The social enterprise of the NGO, makes stylish fashion and homeware goods from roadside rubbish and over the next couple of weeks, they will be opening their first shop in one of the bustling lanes off Siem Reap’s Old Market.
This means that volunteers can now work longer days at the project if they wish (instead of mornings only), working at the project’s base in the morning and at the shop in the afternoon, helping the women with their social & communication skills while they're working in the shop.
The new shop will also have a workshop on the first floor, offering passersby the chance see the ladies in action, participate in a ‘make your own’ workshop where they will be taught to make their own creations, as well as browse all the beautiful products for sale in the shop. This will help generate valuable awareness for the project and increase the income of the women.
The second piece of great news is that the enterprise has just landed a huge order from a new luxury hotel in Siem Reap. The project will be creating crocheted laundry baskets and bins for the hotel rooms. Sokhon, pictured, came up with the idea and made the sample, and is now overseeing her team of colleagues as they work hard to meet her exacting standards! It’s so great to see them stepping up to these new challenges with the utmost dedication and hard work.
