Charitable objectives
To promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public by the relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and disadvantaged communities.
Sustainable development means “development which meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Globalteer’s History
Globalteer was founded as a UK non-profit organisation in June 2006 and quickly achieved full charity status by June 2007. We are fully accredited by the Charities Commission of England and Wales.
Globalteer recognised that overseas NGO’s could gain a great deal from the volunteer support, access to international funding and the additional skills that we provide.
Globalteer has three distinct types of overseas project partnerships: -
• Partnership with an established local NGO, providing volunteer support, financial assistance and additional skills such as education, healthcare, accounting, web design and child protection.
• Partnership with a new NGO, providing initial finances for building facilities for the project’s operations such as a school or orphanage. Ongoing volunteer support, financial assistance and additional skills such as education, healthcare, accounting, web design and child protection.
• Globalteer established projects in locations where no other community support exists and a need has been identified. This type of project would be fully funded and supported by Globalteer from the beginning.
The support provided varies from project to project but can include: -
• Building expenses
• Food and nutritional needs
• Educational materials
• Activity materials, arts, day trips
• Local staff wages
• Sports programmes
• Local transportation
• Training
• Healthcare
• Land / building rental costs
• Electricity and other utilities
Each project is different in what they require from Globalteer, we listen to their needs. Some projects will require large numbers of volunteers whilst others will require additional funding sources. Some will require Globalteer’s assistance in education or child protection others in accounting or web design.
Wildlife projects generally act independently with large cash donations from Globalteer to be able to build their own enclosures, feed the animals and provide their own veterinary care.
Sustainability Globalteer works closely with our in country project partners, providing financial support and volunteers to assist in the daily running of the projects. Our vision is for the projects to be sustainable and eternal. We strive to ensure that our projects can not only sustain the amazing work that they do but also expand to ensure their continual existence. Globalteer holds a policy that the volunteers will not replace local employment but the donations supplied help pay for local support staff and permanent employment at the projects. Volunteers provide their individual skills and financial donations to help the projects to exist and expand. Many of our projects work in extremely poor countries where funding to help the least fortunate is unavailable, volunteers from overseas make the continual existence of the projects possible.
Globalteer always works with local architects / contractors when building schools, orphanages or community centres. This ensures that the building and therefore the projects are as self sustainable as possible. This includes rain water recycling, solar technology, natural air flow (no air con or fans) and water pumps. Bamboo or other fast growing sustainable products are used where possible. Wood is recycled and new wood is rarely used in buildings. A moveable school is being designed in Cambodia to allow a quick, cheap and environmentally friendly option for all NGO’s to use.
Bicycles are used instead of fossil fuel transportation where possible to reduce ongoing costs and help protect the environment. Laptops are used in classes rather than desktop PC’s to reduce electricity consumption. Sources of income generation are created at the projects to lessen the need for donations, these include sewing centres once the children reach adulthood, gift shops selling goods to support the projects and growing food and raising stock to feed the children.
Many volunteer placement organisations are commercial companies that do not support the children, communities or project financially. This is where Globalteer is different, not only do we want to financially support the children and projects, we are legally required to do so in accordance with UK law. Registered charities have a very high status and must act in accordance with the charitable objectives at all times.
We are an organisation independent of government, politics and religion with the objective to help projects and communities around the world.
Globalteer work in poverty stricken countries to provide assistance to those most in need.
We send volunteers to schools to provide free education to children who are unable to pay fees to go to local schools. We work closely with centres that care for children providing support and funding to allow a safe and comfortable environment in the most important and vulnerable time in their lives. In developing countries the poorest people are often overlooked as there is little governmental funding available to provide support. We work with projects that help the most vulnerable children and communities. By providing an education and vocational training to children we give them an opportunity to break the relentless cycle of poverty and support their own families by becoming a useful and productive member of their society.
We work with environmental and animal rescue projects.
We believe that communities and their environment are inter linked - if we destroy the environment we also destroy the community.
We also believe that endangered animals should be protected. We are against the exploitation of animals for tourism, medicine and the illegal wildlife trade.
The projects provide a safe environment for animals of all circumstances - whether rescued from the illegal trade or unwanted pets. The animals are either repatriated into their natural habitat or if this is not possible then homed in a safe and respectful environment for the remainder of their lives.
